Volcano Eruption In Eastern Congo

On May 22, Mount Nyiragongo erupted causing the citizens of Goma to enter chaos.

Goma is located in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC) and it is located only 6 miles from the volcano. Nyiragongo is notorious as a dangerous and active volcano with its last eruption being in 2002. The eruption in 2002 was responsible for the death of 250 people, and the loss of homes for 120,000.

This recent eruption has caused large panic in Goma causing them to flee to other parts of the city. 8,000 people have crossed the border of DRC into the country of Rwanda in fear of safety. Rwanda made a statement they would be placed in schools and worship places. In the midst of this chaos, 150 children have been separated from their families and 170 are suspected to be missing. The lava has not gotten very far into the city of Goma and reached an airport. 11 people have died while trying to evacuate the city. 600 homes have been destroyed and so have 5 schools.
